Sometimes you just have to choose......

When we take digital photographs we always end up with a dilemma, Black and White or Colour?

Is there anything wrong with either? Well no, but sometimes a photograph can 'feel' like a black and white image yet not really make it.

This is the same image (yes i know the crop is slightly different) with the same RAW processing. Even though it's the same image, do we get a different emotional response from the colour to the black and white? Do they feel exactly the same, but one is aesthetically more pleasing to look at thank the other?

These seem pretty important questions to most photographers. Sometimes the work just doesn't have the 'punch' to go black and white, and as a colour image has a touch of the 'ABD' (Already Been Done). I know I only took this image yesterday, but I have been slowly picking it apart critically  for most of the night and this morning and have come to the same conclusion as I did when I took it which is it's a pretty good image, but lacks punch. Something is missing from this image in both versions, and I can't think what it might be. They are both just kind, well boring to be honest. I love my work most of the time and really enjoy the act of taking photos, but in this case I think the image in my head has missed the image shown in the camera.

Just ever so slightly.

Back to the streets.....

Finally been back on the street hitting the shutter button again. Can't explain how much fun it is, but you could probably guess.

I will endeavour over the next few weeks to catch up a little in not only my posting, but share a bit more of my work.

Lensbaby Muse Trial..

Well I went and purchased a Lensbaby Muse the other day, and have been fiffing and faffing about with it for  like 3 days now.

I have been using the f4 aperture disc, and think I might really need to get on the f5.6 just for a slight larger and sharper "sweet spot". I must admit though I am using the Plastic Optic so everything is a little more Dreamy and Soft, and feel the investment into the Double Glass will happen when I decide to use it for more Portrait work.

There are many many wonderful little toys and experiments that can be done with this remarkable lens. I am also waiting for the Creative Aperture kit to arrive in Australia for even more fun.

My Thoughts thus far..

I'm still a little undecided on this. I need to head out and shot a lot more with it, just to get the feel and range of what this lens can achieve. I plan on doing a few more Street and City shots before I pass judgement, as anything I say now just wouldn't be fair. I think for landscape and cityscape style shots, the plastic optic offers an AMAZING chance to be extremely creative and offer an almost tilt shift feel to images.

I will walk down to a few of the Highway Overpass's around my house over the next few days and see what images I'm able to produce. I will post my results over at my Flickr page.

More Pictures on flickr...

nikon_f4121

I have been playing with some more Black and White film as of late and getting some very interesting results.

I have posted up a couple here, but head over to my flickr to keep an eye on what I'm doing.

Eric Kim Street Photography..

I have to say that watching this video on Eric Kim and it always makes me think of why street photography is so underrated. It's quite inspirational seeing him get right in the face of most people, and grabbing a capture that might be the one he is looking for.

Quite inspirational.

Bill Cunningham New York

I was going through my normal Thursday Morning rituals. I get the Age Newspaper and was flicking through the Green Guide. Reading all the little tit bits about new generational stuff and the things bubbling under the surface of TV wonderland.

The most interesting thing I saw was that the DVD has now become available for the photographer Bill Cunningham. Bill rides an old Schwinn bicycle around New York City looking for those at the height of fashion and capturing there lovely image. He still shoots film and uses a Manuel Focus (yeah MANUAL FOCUS) lens.

Hes has captured some LOVELY LOVEY shots you can take find them through here.
